Images are an essential part of medical education and practice. Traditionally, drawings and illustrations have been an integral tool for sharing medical knowledge. Over the centuries new technologies have lead to an increased number of formats available for capturing and displaying medical images. DICOM is a standard image format supported by most of the medical imaging equipment manufacturers. Old scanners did not produce DICOM images though and used other formats instead.
